Railay Beach

Railay Beach is the crown jewel of Thailand's coastline and one of the most photographed beaches in the world — a peninsula of powder-white sand and translucent turquoise water entirely surrounded by sheer, jungle-draped limestone karst towers that make road access impossible. The only way in is by longtail boat from nearby Ao Nang (15-minute journey, 100 THB per person), and this single logistical fact transforms Railay from a merely beautiful beach into a genuinely magical retreat: the absence of cars and motorbikes creates a serenity that almost all of Thailand's most famous beaches have long since lost.

Railay actually consists of four distinct beach areas, each with its own character. Railay West is the showstopper — the postcard beach with the finest white sand, calmest water, and the most dramatic karst backdrop. Sunsets here, when the limestone towers glow amber against a bruised purple sky, are among the finest in Asia. Railay East, facing the mangroves and the longtail boat pier, serves as the functional hub, with the majority of guesthouses, restaurants, and bars.

Phra Nang Cave Beach is arguably even more spectacular — a sheltered cove accessible on foot (20 minutes from Railay West) featuring a sacred cave adorned with hundreds of hand-carved wooden phalluses left as offerings by local fishermen, a tidal lagoon, and water so clear you can see individual coral heads from the surface. Ton Sai Beach to the north is the preferred zone for rock climbers and backpackers.

Rock climbing is Railay's greatest unexpected attraction: the limestone cliffs offer over 700 bolted routes across all skill levels, with half-day guided courses available for complete beginners. The combination of sea, cliff, and jungle from any mid-height belay station creates a sensory experience unlike any other climbing destination in the world.

Getting there: Longtail boats depart from Ao Nang beach pier and Krabi Town night market pier. Ao Nang is 40 minutes by road from Krabi International Airport. Last boats back typically leave Railay around 9–10pm. Best time to visit: November–April for calm seas and best visibility.
